Can I play games online on my Wii with someone who is playing on Playstation 3?

If I have the same game as someone (i.e: Rock Band) can I play online with a friend who has a Play Station 3 or do they have to have a Wii as well?

Some games can be designed to operate online using the same servers but Rock Band is not one of them. Actually i’m not sure how many (if there are any) online Wii games that meet players from a different console. The thing that makes gamecube and wii different from the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 is the speed the disc spins. Wii uses less energy so its disc spin at a slower speed than other console speeds. because of this, it uses less values and graphics aren’t as advanced and/or clear.
Call of Duty:Modern Warfare Reflex is an example of an Xbox game ported to the Wii. Its the same as Xbox Call of duty but the values are decreased so it can play on the wii at a slower speed.
